How to Store Your Camera Properly During Rainy Days

Luran Photography Equipment ยท 2026-10-10 ยท Camera Care

What damages gear on rainy days usually isn't the rain itself โ€” it's storing the camera while it's still damp. Trapped moisture accelerates lens fungus and can short-circuit electronics. Follow these five steps whenever your gear gets wet.

Five steps for wet gear

1Dry the exterior first. Wipe the body and lens with a clean dry soft cloth, paying attention to button gaps, the hot shoe and the lens mount where water hides.
2Remove the battery and memory card. Power off, take out the battery and card, and leave the compartment doors open. If a lens is mounted, detach it, cap both ends, and put the body cap on.
3Air-dry in a ventilated spot โ€” no heat. Leave the body and lens separated in a cool, ventilated place to dry naturally. Never blast them with a hair dryer on hot โ€” heat damages rubber seals and coatings and can drive moisture deeper inside.
4Store only when fully dry. After a few hours, when everything feels dry to the touch, move the gear into a dry cabinet or sealed box at 40%โ€“50% humidity. Sealing in damp gear locks the moisture in with it.
5For long-term storage, remove power. Take batteries out, cap your lenses, and check stored gear monthly โ€” air it out now and then.

Three common mistakes

โŒ Sealing gear away while damp โ€” trapped moisture invites fungus and corrosion.
โŒ Baking in direct sun or by a heater โ€” heat harms coatings, ages rubber, and can cause condensation inside the body.
โŒ Powering on repeatedly to "test" a soaked camera โ€” electricity plus water is how boards get fried. If water got inside, don't power on; get it checked.

โš ๏ธ Camera got soaked? Act fast: power off immediately, remove the battery, don't shake it or apply hot air, wipe the exterior dry, and bring it to a repair shop for inspection as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the worse the corrosion โ€” and the repair bill.
๐Ÿ’ก Before heading out: a cheap rain cover goes a long way on wet days, and keeping a small silica gel pack plus a dry cloth in your bag is always a good idea.
