How to Prevent Lens Fungus: A Practical Guide for Everyday Photographers

Lens fungus โ€” those spiderweb-like growths inside your lens elements โ€” is one of the most common problems for photographers in humid climates. It causes haze and flare, and in severe cases etches the lens coating. Fungus spores are everywhere; they thrive when humidity exceeds 60% in dark, poorly ventilated spaces. The good news: prevention is straightforward.

1. Keep humidity at 40%โ€“50%

This is the single most important rule. Below 60% relative humidity, fungus struggles to grow; 40%โ€“50% is the sweet spot for camera gear:

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: don't go too dry either. Below 30% for long periods can dry out lens lubricants and rubber parts. 40%โ€“50% is ideal.

2. Don't store gear in your camera bag long-term

Camera bags and leather cases are convenient for carrying but trap moisture. Take your gear out when you get home and store it in a dry cabinet or ventilated spot โ€” the bag is for transport, not storage.

3. Wipe down gear after each use

Sweat, fingerprints and airborne oils feed fungus. Get in the habit of wiping the lens barrel with a clean soft cloth after shooting, and always cap both ends of the lens before storing.

4. Air your lenses out regularly

Fungus hates light and airflow. Once a month, take your lenses out for half a day in indirect light (never bake them in direct sun โ€” heat damages coatings and focus motors). UV is a natural growth inhibitor.

5. Check and refresh desiccants

Color-indicating silica gel turns pink (or green) when saturated โ€” recharge it in a microwave/oven at low heat or replace it. A dead desiccant in the box is the same as no desiccant. Check more often during rainy seasons.

6. Already have fungus? Don't open the lens yourself

Internal lens groups are precision assemblies โ€” DIY disassembly risks dust, decentering and scratched elements. Instead:

  1. Early, minor spots: a professional fungus cleaning service can usually remove them completely.
  2. Coating already etched: the element may need replacement โ€” the sooner you act, the smaller the loss.
โš ๏ธ Warning: folk remedies like blasting the lens with UV lamps or wiping inner elements with alcohol are risky and can damage coatings. Not recommended.
